What We Teach

Karate

We instruct children from ages 4 and up as well as teens and adults in Okinawan Goju ryu Karate-do. In this internationally well known system, which is a style designed to teach you how not to fight, students will learn a variety of blocks, strikes, kicks, stances, grab and control techniques and how to fall properly. Okinawan Goju ryu was created by Master Chojun Miyagi (sometimes written as Miyagi Chojun) and was formally named and recognized as a system of self defense by the governing body in Japan in 1930. Our particular style closely resembles the Meibukan style of Okinawan Goju ryu, which was formed by Meitoku Yagi. Yagi sensei is widely recognized as the successor to Chojun Miyagi. After Miyagi’s passing in 1953, his family awarded Miyagi’s belt and uniform to Yagi sensei due to his extreme loyalty, knowledge, character and abilities in Goju ryu.

Techniques are only a small part of what students actually learn while training in this martial art. Children and teens learn a way of life that helps build strong character traits that include: Honor, Loyalty, Fair Play, Regard for human life, Self-respect, Self-esteem and Non-aggressive behavior. They also develop improved sense of balance, coordination and concentration. Adults benefit in the same way too. Additionally, karate helps relieve stress, allows for a healthy workout and breeds a quiet confidence necessary to meet the challenges of daily life

Jujutsu

We instruct children and adults from ages 8 and up in two internationally recognized martial arts. The two systems, which are taught separately, are Hakko Denshin Ryu Jujutsu and Yoshitsune Jujitsu. Both are excellent systems of self - defense. The philosophy of these arts is similar in that the student learns that he/she need not be powerful to control or disable an assailant. Although some of the strikes and kicks included in karate are taught in these systems, the main focus is learning how to control someone by utilizing joint lock and takedown techniques which require more skill than power. For a more in depth look at these two styles, we recommend you check out these two sites: www.hakkojujutsu.com and www.depasqualejujitsu.com (Click on “Yoshitsune” on the top tool bar once you arrive at the site.)

The same benefits as karate can be found in these arts as well.

Judo

We also offer an excellent program of Kodokan Judo for kids and adults ages 6 and up. Under the instruction of our Sensei Noel Layman, students will learn all of the throws and ground techniques required for mastery of this self – defense art and sport. Students can train simply for self – defense and fitness and/or they can also train to compete in monthly judo tournaments

Potential students are always welcome to come in and try a free class in any or all of these wonderful martial arts.
